JP Morgan Coaching Skillscase study: JPMorgan coaching skills

Coaching Skills Training Leads to Internal Solutions

When JPMorganChase IBO Derivatives faced major migration projects, they realised a gap in their internal capability. To make the transformation work required a wide-ranging series of training and coaching skills that did not exist within the organisation.

With little internal training expertise, the IBO Derivatives group commissioned Training Focus to develop these abilities, and create a sustainable legacy of structured approaches to training and coaching.

Training Focus spent time identifying the real issues facing their client, and set about creating a detailed training needs analysis across the whole organisation, looking at every role, developing training and recruitment needs, and allowing managers to map appraisals and build their teams to achieve the new organisational goals.

A programme of presentation skills courses linked to this change process gave managers the techniques and confidence to communicate the strategy effectively, and to motivate their teams in their development.

The next stage was to develop coaching skills, and create a structured approach to coaching delivery. The net results have been:

  • A consistent approach to training and coaching

  • New staff are more effective more quickly

  • New staff take a more inquisitive approach, as they are encouraged to ask more questions, to learn more quickly

  • Management capabilities have been extended through coaching skills to place motivation and development at the heart of management style

Simon Bygrave is part of the team that manages the management training for the migration project across JPMorganChase IBO Derivatives. This team has become an essential resource within the group, as a result of the coaching from Training Focus.

Bygrave comments "Training Focus have given us far more than a simple training programme. They have created an approach and attitude to coaching and development that has been seen and taken on board by other divisions across JPMorganChase, so much so that we act as coaches and advisors to them.

" Training Focus created a multiplier effect that has inspired all areas of our organisation, and added to our culture and effectiveness".

Bygrave also comments "Their positive approach and willingness to listen to our organisational issues sets them apart from other training organisations."
